"Reading aloud with your child
opens the doors of true friendship.
This gentle routine will soon
become a pleasure for you both.
Your small effort of twenty minutes
every day for a few early years
will bear fruit for a lifetime.'

Wonder of Reading Library and the Literacy Garden

Keep reading each night and work towards earning your Accelerated Reader patches! Students will gain more enjoyment of reading with practice and increase their fluency levels, vocabulary, and spelling skills.

Every child is able to check out two library books at a given time (when in good standing with library) which gives them a great opportunity to choose from our Wonders of Reading Library. The library hours vary.

Please take the time to stop by and visit our library at Lorne St. Mrs. Cox does a wonderful job giving our students encouragement and assistance in making book selections.

Accelerated Reader Program

What is the Accelerated Reader Program? Accelerated Reader (AR) is a compute program that helps teachers monitor children's independent readng practice. Your child picks a book at his own level and reads it at either his/her own pace or at a pace that is predetermined by the teacher. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on a computer. Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read. Children earn prizes for reaching predetermined goals based on the point value assigned to each book. AR gives both children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then use to help your child set goals and direct ongong reading practice.

Because children get to choose their own books to read, instead of having one assigned to them, it makes reading a much more enjoyable experience.

How Does It Work? Most of the books in our Wonder of Reading library have stickers on the spine to indicated recommended grade level reading. On the inside of each book there is an AR point value for each book. The higher the point value of the book, the more difficult the reading. Prize patches are earned based on the number of points. Points stay with your child throughout their time at Lorne.

What Does My Child Need To Do? Select books of his/her choice, reads it at his/her own pace. When finished, they will take a short online quiz about the book. The tests can only be taken at school either in the Library or in your child's classroom.

Why Should My Child Participate? The score that your child receives on the quiz provides an indication of your child’s level of understanding of the content of the book. AR gives both children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct your child’s ongoing reading practice.

Encourage Your Child to Read!
